‘Swayambu’(self-evolved deity) is the deity which is worshipped in the Shani Shingnapur temple. The story behind this black-stoned ‘swayambu’ statue got changed over generations. It is believed that some devoted shepherds dreamt of Lord Shani and he told them about his ‘swayambu’ form in a stone structured manner, which started bleeding when a stone was touched with a pointed rod by shepherds. Lord directed them to built an open-sky temple for him. This lead to the construction of Shani Shingnapur temple.
