According to Puranas, Shravan was the time when the churning of the sea (Samudra Manthan) was done by Devas and Asuras in the search of Nectar (ambrosia). The snake which circles around Lord Shiva’s neck was used as a rope for churning. This resulted in the emergence of 14 valuable gems. All these gems got distributed among devas and asuras except the 14th which was the deadliest poison called Halahala. That was the time when Shiva came and drank the poison and stored it in His throat.
His act saved the universe and he came to be known as ‘Neel Kanth’. This sums up the History of Shravan Month.
